What are the advantages of taking protein supplements after weight training?

I do a fair amount of weight training as an all round fitness regime. However, I have noticed a lot of folk take protein drinks after a training session. I would like to know the advantages, disadvantages and the long term effect of such supplements.

Why take protein after weight training?
After weight training your muscles lets say rips. (that’s why you get sore) After it rips it heals itself. But if your take protein after a workout, your body will take that protein and built more muscle where your muscle have ripped.
Advantages
Drinking protein shake will help provide your body with protein. Eating protein is always the best choice, but eating too much meat or other source of protein can added up to too many calories. Drinking protein can be leaner, depends on which one you drink.
So if you want to built more muscle then take an protein shake within one hour after weight training.

Disadvantage
For those guys who are very muscular already, they have to continue to drink protein to maintain their bulk.
You gonna make sure you’re drinking to right one too. Some has alot of calories! Like Muscle Milk! But these are for people who want to gain weight and muscle.
