Working in Luxemburg. Language question!?
Im a junior architect and fitness instructor. Im looking to move to Luxemburg as my girlfriend has possibly got a new job there. How difficult would it be for me to get employment if I only speak english? I need to deal with the public on a daily basis in both my professions.
Forgot to add that Im from Ireland, so allowed to live and work there without visa.
You will probably not be able to get a job in Luxembourg in the professions that you want as you would have to be fluent in French, German and most likely Luxembourgish. However, there are areas where if you only speak English, you would be able to work. This is mostly in the financial area and after a while you should be able to pick up enough of the other languages to be able to apply for a job in the area that you want. The other possibility is to work for one of the European institutions and you might get a job there as part of the quota system that reserves a certain number of jobs for people from each EU country.
Don’t let the language problem deter you, because you will find that since you are surrounded by people talking many languages all day long, you can’t help but pick them up.
