Why are athletics uniforms so skimpy?
I don’t get why athletics (track) uniforms are so skimpy. After watching a few meets, aren’t the athletes embarassed to be showing half their butt on live TV. I’ve heard that their uniforms make them more aeordynamic, but does that really matter for something like javelin, like in this photo: http://img244.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=36539_Berlin-Dynamik-Wettkampf-fitness-kraftvoll-linda-Speerwerfen_122_145lo.jpg
I don’t think any guys are paying attention to the javlein distance! What do you guys think? Do you have to wear such skimpy uniforms? Why are they like that? Do you think athletes are embarassed? Do you think they’ll continue to be like that or get more skimpy? Thanks for answering.
Stephanie, this doesn’t just happen with athletics ( aka “track and field”) or with gymnastics- it happens in a lot of other sports, especially tennis and sports like beach and regular volleyball. Beach volleyball in particular is bad about this- and it’s obvious to me that they are selling SEX as well as sports. Yes, there are undoubtedly athletes who are embarrassed by such revealing clothing, and I think it’s wrong for the IOC and the various sports federations to require use of such things. Have you ever noticed the tiny Speedo bikinis that the male swimmers like Michael Phelps are forced to wear? Those may be aerodynamic, yes, but they also are VERY REVEALING- and the clear intent behind them is to sell SEX, not athleticism, which subverts the real meaning of the Olympics, which are not supposed to be about sex.. The same problem even exists in the WINTER Olympics- take a look at some of the costumes which figure skaters must wear as an example. There have been numerous protests over the years about the length of the female skaters’ skirts ( right now, they always look like they are wearing mini skirts, and it isn’t always attractive to look at women who have “thunder thighs” from doing a lot of athletics) and about the rather horrendous amount of sequins which appear on men’s costumes. There have been some rather prominent skaters in recent years who’ve refused to wear such costumes, on the grounds that the costumes make them look gay, and I can’t blame them for thinking this. I think that way myself, in fact. About the only set of sports in the whole Olympic games which I can think of that don’t have a problem with dress are the equestrian sports. In this case, the IOC DOESN’T regulate what riders in these sports are allowed to wear- that is the responsibility of the FEI, which is the world governing body of all horse sports except for racing, polo, and steeplechase. It’s the FEI which sets the dress code for sports like show jumping and dressage- and the requirements for breeches, boots, hunt style coats or shadbellies are requirements that have CENTURIES of tradition behind them. These sports are also the only ones in which competitors have the option of appearing in a military dress uniform, if they are on active duty in the armed forces or national police force of their respective countries. One of the reasons for this has a lot to do with where the 3 Olympic equestrian disciplines originated- they were all invented in and developed by the great armies of Europe and Asia- not so much as sports, but rather as a means of training horses and riders for combat or mounted warfare. It was customary for officers who competed in such events to wear mess dress or a dress uniform when doing so- and this has carried over into the Olympics and other international competitions.
Will uniforms continue to get skimpy in these other sports? It’s hard to say, but I think they will, because again, the Olympics have become less about athletics and more about sex in recent years, and I think this trend will continue. It’s sad to see the Olympics perverted like this, but that’s the way the culture has evolved. There are those who think it’s cool to see an athlete’s a** on TV, especially when they are working hard- there are always people who get a perverse thrill out of this. I know there were plenty of women who were salivating and fawning over Phelps last year- that’s why a lot of people got pissed off when he was caught smoking a bong at that frat party he crashed. Actions like that tend to ruin this notion that all athletes are clean cut, saintly people- and this image is held by lots of fans.
